Easter came and went in a flurry of April showers and a sprinkling of new shoots just beginning to appear in the flowerbeds giving everyone hope that warmer weather was on its way. It seemed that Danny’s first venture into the world of showbiz had started better than he or anyone else could have anticipated. He excitedly told Ashley that the gay strippers, using the working title of the Prancing Poofs, were nearly ready to launch!

The response to the adverts had been overwhelming, with photos of gorgeous men in various states of undress flooding into the Shepherds Bush house. Inspired, Mother Jack was busy making smaller and smaller costumes in leather, silk and satin in anticipation. The finished garments hung on a colourful rack in the basement, awaiting inspection by the twenty successful candidates, aged between eighteen and thirty-five, who were eager to get started.

Although thrilled for his friend, Ashley did not venture out from his flat all over Easter. He telephoned a florist and ordered a wreath to be sent for his aunt as he felt too upset to attend the funeral. Dying on her 80th birthday had somehow made the tragedy worse.

He also took the time to read the large dossier that the private investigator had gathered on him, which included everything from the colour of his hair down to the fact that he slept in the nude. The researcher had even managed to trace the source of the cologne he had had made up in a perfumery at Covent Garden, named Barrie. It was uncanny how, apart from the obvious comments from Belle and Danny, this man had managed to get information about every aspect of his life, from the day he was born in Wiltshire to the day he had run away from home at the age of sixteen. It chronicled how he met a guy in Piccadilly Circus who seduced him and then wanted him to join a “house for boys” in Mayfair. Declining, he had been forced to sleep rough until he got a temporary job that included meals in a hotel. After that he lived in the hotel basement until he joined the Jerry Juveniles dance group, which he loved, hoping to become a dancer in American musicals, until his dream was shattered when the troupe folded six months later, bankrupt.

Joining an escort agency and learning massage to pay his way, he attended the North London Polytechnic for two years where he qualified as a social worker, choosing this profession as he cared about people and believed he could make a difference. He found the work hard and rigid, constantly harassed by bosses to take more cases, so he left. Disillusioned, he had joined the civil service as a social services inspector in a desk job and stayed until about eighteen months ago when his department moved to Leeds. Since then there had been no work, which brought him back to today and Montgomery’s strange offer. Ashley stopped reading the file when it mentioned how he had met Barrie and his rape and murder by a twenty-year rent boy in Manchester.
